The biggest mistake I see people make on social media

Working in social media I spend A LOT of time on the platforms. Too much time honestly. But I see this mistake time and time again, especially from small businesses and brands.

Brands post on social media and that’s it. They hit post and then they don’t come back until it’s time to post again, but social media doesn’t stop there.

It’s called social media — you have to be social!

Here are four ways to be more social on your accounts:

  1. Engage

It’s so important to engage with your audience. One of my favorite quotes says we teach our audience how to interact with us based on how we interact with them. People aren’t going to leave comments if they think they’re talking to the void. Check your posts and respond back to comments. Answer direct messages in a timely manner. Not only are you providing good customer service, but you’re also helping yourself in the algorithms by adding additional interactions to your posts.

2. Follow and engage with other accounts

It’s not likely that people are going to stumble upon your account. It’s more likely that they’ll see a comment you posted on another account and then click your name. Start to build relationships on social media with other people in your industry. Take the time to follow and engage with other accounts in a sincere way. You’re getting your brand name out there, helping increase your awareness and organically building up your social media presence and following.

3. Add value

You need to be adding value through your social media posts. It’s why someone will follow you and keep following you. But you can also add value in other ways on social media. Join Facebook groups related to your industry. For example, I’m in a group called Networking Women of the Triangle. I keep an eye on the page and every once in awhile I’ll see a question related to social media. Sometimes I might comment a direct sales push such as, “I actually teach a class on this topic. Here’s the link!” Or it might make more sense to simply share a tip. Either way I’m providing value to others, which also presents myself as an expert in my field. Now, someone will hopefully click on the link or my name and feel inclined to learn more about my business.

4. Market your accounts

As I mentioned, it’s not likely that someone is going to stumble upon your accounts. You have to market them. Share the social media icons in your newsletter and on your website. Add your social media links to your email signature. If you have a brick and mortar store you can put up a sign or table tent with your social media handles. It’s key to cross-promote your social media channels in the places that you’re already reaching your audience.

It’s almost impossible to grow your social media presence without putting in the time and work. Yes, it takes a significant amount of effort. But the benefits make it worth the time.
